Is Thicker Waterproofing Always Better?

Many believe this during home renovations: "Thicker waterproofing must equate to better protection." But is that really the case?

Is Thicker Waterproofing Always Better?

The Myth of Thickness

No, thicker isn't necessarily better. For one thing, waterproofing should be applied in multiple thin layers rather than too thickly to avoid cracking or peeling—similar to applying makeup. Moreover, like cosmetics, waterproofing materials are not cheap. Over-application is not only time-consuming and labor-intensive but also wasteful. However, a layer that is too thin won’t be effective and can age and fail prematurely.

The Optimal Thickness

So, what's the right thickness? Using Polyaspartic Polyurea as an example for non-destructive waterproofing:

  • Bathrooms and Kitchens: The suggested thickness is 0.3-0.4mm for flat surfaces and 0.15mm for vertical surfaces.
  • Balconies: Suggested thickness is 0.4-0.6mm.
  • Exterior Walls: Suggested thickness is 0.4-0.6mm.
  • For prone areas like drains and pipes: Multiple coats (4-7 layers) are recommended.

Different products have different requirements, so understanding them before commencing work is crucial. Remember, actual usage depends on various factors such as construction technique, surface smoothness, environmental temperature, and product consistency.

Effective Waterproofing Application

During application, avoid trying to achieve the required thickness in a single application. Instead, apply multiple thin coats, crisscrossing each layer to avoid missed spots and bubbling.

Effective Waterproofing Application

Special Note: Before the waterproofing layer has set, avoid walking on it to prevent damage. Protect entrances, walls, and other areas during the application process to avoid contamination of the finished surfaces.

In conclusion, different waterproofing materials require different thicknesses depending on the application. Don't fall into the trap of thinking thicker is always better, as it could lead to unnecessary expenses and ineffective results. Hopefully, this insight has been helpful.

In addition to waterproofing, Polyaspartic Polyurea offers advantages in anti-corrosion and flooring projects, providing superior performance in various applications.
